Eight Men Out: Barcelona Directors Resign
It’s another ringing round of disappointment for Barcelona president Joan LaPorta.
Unhappy with the club’s recent performance (no trophies in two years), LaPorta lost a vote of confidence on Sunday, with 60.6% of supporters expressing their displeasure. The vote fell short of the 2/3 required for a new election. LaPorta’s term lasts until 2010.
LaPorta received a further hit today, when eight of the 17 Barcelona board directors resigned. Because of this, LaPorta has pledged his fate to the 3,000 member General Assembly, which should meet in September.
Democracy is a wonderful thing. If only American sports teams would practice it.
