Avraham “Avram” Grant (Hebrew: אברהם “אברם” גרנט; born Avraham Granat on 4 May 1955 in Petah Tikva, Israel) is an Israeli association football manager and manager, most recently at Chelsea Football Club. Grant has spent the majority of his career coaching and managing in Israel, winning a number of national league and cup victories with different teams, and also managing the national team for a time.
Grant moved to England in 2006 to become Technical Director of Portsmouth F.C. before being appointed Director of Football at Chelsea F.C. in July 2007. Two months later, in September 2007, and following the departure of José Mourinho, Grant was appointed manager of Chelsea, but was sacked at the end of the season after failing to win any trophies.
Chelsea FC appoints Israeli Avram Grant as new manager.
Chelsea appointed long-time Israeli soccer manager Avram Grant and Steve Clarke to take charge of the Premier League team Thursday after manager Jose Mourinho’s sudden departure.
“Chelsea football club can confirm that Avram Grant and Steve Clarke will be in charge of the first team from today (Thursday),” Chelsea said on its Web site.
Chelsea did not say how long the pair would be running the team or exactly what their roles would be. Chelsea’s next game is at defending champion Manchester United on Sunday.
After several low-profile decades, Chelsea has returned to the top and remained there since winning their second FA Cup in 1997.
Their impressive list of achievements since includes a UEFA Cup, another FA Cup in 2000, two League Cups, as well as the Premier League championship twice in a row, including last season.
One look at their star-studded team for next season says it all: Chelsea is a top club and a must-see for every football fan around the globe.
